I phoned my sister for advice.
She was a woman, and I thought that perhaps she could give me a few pointers on how best to approach the fairer sex.
"Just talk to them," she said, "women like men who have a sense of humour, men who are interesting,
confident..."
I took her advice to heart and, as luck would have it, the next time I visited Roger in hospital, I found myself sharing a lift with a beautiful young nurse.
She smiled at me as she got in and asked if I was going up.
I replied that I was.
I remembered my sister's advice of the night before and thought that this would be an ideal opportunity to try out her suggestion. I needed to say
something witty and charming, something that would give her a glimpse of
the a sophisticated, exciting and hilariously entertaining man I can be.
I had to think fast because we were running out of floors.
"Lifts, eh?" I said in the end.
She didn't say anything in reply.
I was a bit disappointed by that.
